Pairing instructions

A few steps are required to pair your new AirPods or charging case.

The top section contains the pairing instructions for setting up a new AirPod.
A little further down, you will find the pairing instructions for setting up a new charging case.

Pairing instructions: new AirPod

Important information about AirPods Pro 2nd generation

Due to a software error, you may see an error message:
The new AirPod is from the 1st generation instead of the 2nd generation as ordered.
This error message can be ignored.
If you follow our instructions, the software will be updated and the error will disappear.

Step 1: Open AirPods in Settings

Go to the settings on any device that is near the AirPods and has already been connected to them, and go to the “Bluetooth” sub-item.

Step 2: Eject AirPods

In the Bluetooth settings, go to the (i) next to your AirPods. Select “Ignore This Device” at the bottom of the page and confirm. Also confirm that you want the AirPods removed from the iCloud.
Important: If you still have the old AirPods to be replaced, please put them far away from the set. These can interfere with the pairing.

Step 3: Merge and charge the new set

Now insert the earbuds you bought from us into your “old” earbuds in the charging case.
Connect the case to a charger and leave everything to charge for 30 minutes with the lid closed. Do not open the lid during these 30 minutes, as it may affect the update.

Step 4: Pairing the AirPods

Now open the lid of your charging case and leave it open from now on.

If the LED of the charging case flashes white:
The AirPods are already paired with each other. Nevertheless, perform a reset by pressing and holding the button on the back of the charging case for about 30 seconds until the LED pulses red a few times.

If the LED flashes orange, glows solid white, or glows orange, it means that
the pairing must be initiated manually. To do this, press and hold the button on the back of the charging case until the LED begins to pulse white.

Step 5: Connect to the new set

Unlock your iPhone or iPad. The connection indicator on your AirPods should appear immediately and you can connect to the AirPods.
If you are using an Android smartphone or a MacBook, go to the Bluetooth settings here and select the AirPods from the list of connectable devices.

Are you still having trouble setting up your AirPods despite following the instructions?

In rare cases, there are hurdles when pairing a new set of AirPods.
First of all, we ask you to go through the instructions step by step a second and, if necessary, a third time.
In particular, make sure that the AirPods are deleted from each device and then charged for at least 30 minutes.

Pairing instructions: new charging case

Step 1: Open the AirPods in Settings

Go to Settings on each device that is near the AirPods and has already been connected to them, and go to the “Bluetooth” sub-item.

Step 2: Eject AirPods

In the Bluetooth settings, go to the (i) next to your AirPods. Select “Ignore this device” at the bottom of the page and confirm. Also confirm that you want to remove the AirPods from the iCloud.

Step 3: Merge and charge the new set

Now insert both earbuds into the new charging case.
Connect the case to a charger and leave everything to charge for 10 minutes with the lid closed. Do not open the lid during these 10 minutes, as it may affect the update.

Step 4: Pairing the AirPods

Now open the lid of your charging case and leave it open from now on.

If the charging case LED flashes white:
The AirPods are already paired with the charging case. Nevertheless, perform a reset by pressing and holding the button on the back of the charging case for about 30 seconds until the LED pulses red a few times.

If the LED flashes orange, glows solid white or glows orange:
Pairing must be initiated manually. To do this, press and hold the button on the back of the charging case until the LED starts pulsing white.

Step 5: Connect with the new set

Unlock your iPhone or iPad. The connection indicator on your AirPods should appear immediately and you can connect to the AirPods.
If you are using an Android smartphone or a MacBook, go to the Bluetooth settings here and select the AirPods from the list of connectable devices.
